If you are traveling and require a negative COVID-19 test, specific testing sites may be required. Whitman Hospital & Medical Clinics will not be responsible for complications that may arise.
- Call our hotline at 509-397-5717 to speak with an RN regarding COVID-19 concerns or testing questions Monday - Friday 8am - 4:30pm.
- If recommended for testing you will be registered and given an appointment time and further instructions.
- Our primary COVID-19 test is the PCR Nucleic Acid Test with results in 48-72 hours.
- It is best to be tested at least 3 days after symptom onset.
What is COVID-19?
COVID-19 is a novel coronavirus meaning it has not been previously identified. Coronaviruses are a large group of viruses and include the common cold. Most cause mild illnesses; however, they can result in more serious illness such as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS).
How is COVID-19 spread?
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), early reports suggest it is spread person-to-person via respiratory droplets during close contact (within 6 feet) with an infected person. It is possible however, that transmission can occur from touching an object or surface contaminated with COVID-19.
How can I lessen my chance of getting COVID-19 infection?
Prevention strategies are the same as for influenza and include:
- Wash hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or use appropriate amount of alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
- Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue and throw the tissue in the trash
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth
- Avoid close contact with people who are demonstrating flu-like symptoms
- Stay home when you are exhibiting flu-like symptoms
- Frequently clean and disinfect commonly touched surfaces and objects
What are the symptoms of COVID-19?
Common physical symptoms are:
- Fever or chills
- Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
- Muscle or body aches
- New loss of taste or smell
- Sore throat
- Congestion or runny nose
- Nausea or vomiting
What should I do if I am experiencing flu-like symptoms and think I may have COVID-19?
Follow the prevention strategies listed above. During normal business hours, contact your local Whitman Medical Clinic. After hours or if experiencing severe symptoms contact Whitman Hospital or call 911.
Is there treatment for COVID-19?
Treatment is supportive and similar to flu.
Should I wear a cloth face mask?
The CDC recommends that you wear a cloth face mask anytime you are in public or around people who don’t live with you. Face masks help prevent people with COVID-19 from spreading the virus to others. You can have COVID-19 without any symptoms, so this is an important way to slow the spread of the virus. Face masks should not be worn by children under age 2, anyone who has trouble breathing, or anyone who is unconscious or unable to remove the mask without help.
